Dermal fillers are medical device implants approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in helping to create a smoother and/or fuller appearance. Dermal fillers are also known as soft tissue fillers, injectable implants, or wrinkle fillers. They are usually used in the face, cheeks, and lips. The majority of the injectable fillers have a temporary effect. This is because they contain ingredients that are absorbed by the body over time. Some of the most common dermal filler risks are: bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, itching, rash, and difficulty performing activities.
The less common complications include raised bumps in or under the skin. Sometimes, the latter may need to be surgically removed. Some other effects includ infection, open or draining wounds, a sore at the injection site, allergic reactions, and necrosis (tissue death). Unfortunately, the less common side effects mentioned above are the most common issues faced by patients with recessed scars.
Costs vary from $467 to $1,682 according to the type used and are not covered by insurance. Fillers can be a good temporary solution for certain types of scars, but they are expensive. Plus, they can be somewhat risky and temporary.
